Burma &/or China relief
BURMA'S devastating
cyclone will claim at least 300,000 lives, including 120,000
children, an aid worker warned yesterday. Scots Save The Children
worker Scott McGill - based in Burma's biggest city, Rangoon - said
official death toll estimates were certain to climb.
And he added the initial casualties would be swollen by those
falling victim to disease and dehydration. Two million people have
been left homeless with the torrential rains of the monsoon season
on their way.
Scott, 39, said: "The death toll is going to rise. When the Asian
tsunami struck the death toll started quite low and rose steadily as
the days and weeks went on.
>>>>China Earthquake Appeal
The official death toll from last week's massive
earthquake has risen to 41,353 in China.
Survivors are still being found against all odds eight days after
the devastating quake.
State media reported that medical teams had now reached all affected
villages in remote regions of China's southwestern Sichuan province
and were now battling infections in a bid to prevent infection
epidemics.
Doctors have so far found 58 cases of gas gangrene, a bacterial
infection that produces gas within infected flesh, according to the
Xinhua news agency. It said the cases did not represent an epidemic.
At least 32,666 people remain missing following the 7.9-magnitude
quake, which also left 274,683 injured.
